Economy Down, PC Sales Up

The worldwide economy may be faltering, but PC sales are in growth mode, according to numbers released Tuesday by Gartner and IDC, two information technology research firms.
Gartner data indicates that worldwide PC sales for the second quarter of 2008 jumped 16 percent, with 71.9 million units sold, compared to 62.0 million sold in the same quarter last year. IDC numbers are similar: the research company calculated a 15.3% increase and 70.6 million units sold.
据两家科技调查公司Gartner和IDC发布的数据显示,在整个世界经济举步不前的时候个人电脑的销售却呈增长趋势。Gartner表明2008年第二季度世界范围内的电脑销售增长了16%,总出货量达到7190万台,去年同期的出货量为6200万台。
Unit sales are up, but revenues are not. The gains were largely the result of lower average selling prices, or ASPs, according to Mika Kitagawa, a Gartner analyst. “In the professional market, IT budgets have tightened, and IT buyers are getting more conservative,” she said. “They’re either canceling contracts or renegotiating prices.”

In the U.S., the oft-touted “halo effect” from Apple’s iPods and iPhones looks to be encouraging consumers to try the company’s computers as well. Apple saw U.S. sales jump 38.1% in the quarter, according to Gartner (31.7% says IDC), pushing the company into third place, behind Dell and HP, with an 8.5% market share, compared to 6.4% last year.

It displaced Acer, which saw a 20.8% decline in units shipped, largely due to its purchase of Gateway and Packard Bell. Once one PC company acquires another, sales always drop, Ms. Kitagawa said. (IDC says that Apple and Acer are tied with 7.8% U.S. market share.)
While Gartner has not compiled actual ASPs, it notes steep price declines in the home mobile PC market in the U.S. Also, some companies began looking at buying desktop PCs, rather than laptops, as a way to cut costs.

Unit sales were up in every area of the globe: Asia/Pacific was up 18.1%, Latin America was up 23.2%, and Japan saw sales grow by 8.2%.

While Dell dominates the U.S. market, HP is the world-wide market leader, with an 18.1% share compared to Dell’s 15.6%. Apple, number three in the U.S., does not make it into the top five globally on either the Gartner or IDC charts. Those positions are held by Acer, Lenovo and Toshiba.
